Review: MORTAL KOMBAT 11 ULTIMATE Is The Killer Kombo We've Been Waiting For

In a world of ever-growing realism in computers, Mortal Kombat still stands as a beacon of hope and beauty in the buckets of blood and organs it shows in beautiful high definition. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is one amazing game. Yes, some people might find some issues here and there with the gameplay, some odd choices for unlocking certain items or characters, and get grossed out overall. However, if you enjoy any kind of fighting game, great action, or campy stories, this might be one of your best game packages you could add to your collection.

This game has already been out for a little while, and so there isn’t a major reason to go over all the components of why it is a good or bad game. There are plenty of reviews that would match more or less what I would say anyway. I’m just gonna go through and list a lot of the fun reasons why I think this game, especially in this Ultimate edition, is worth your time. The most important part about this game is obviously the actual combat. I love fighting games, and I love a wide variety of them, but I’ve never really enjoyed Mortal Kombat games until now. I think that this game keeps a lot of what is the core of Mortal Kombat and its speed, rhythm, and dynamics. But after the creation of Injustice 2 and years of experience, NetherRealm has created a game that is just as pleasing to veterans as it is to newcomers. If you’re planning on just button mashing or figuring things out on your own, this game might be not as accessible as something like Tekken, Soul Calibur, or Super Smash Brothers, but you would only need two or three minutes of the tutorial to understand the basic components and enjoy. I think it is one of the best blends of accessibility and mastery I’ve seen in a fighting game. Overall, the fighting just feels crisp, slick and like every punch, kick, stab, and throw matter.

I am blown away by how much content is here. A full story mode with surprisingly entertaining cutscenes. A strong additional storyline and various tower challenges that have loads of rewards for players and include tons of unique battle conditions and enemies. The Krypt is basically an interactive loot box opening system. It can be more fun than just opening a ton of loot boxes and has some cool exploration elements, but it is more or less a way to find more armor pieces, vanity items, and unlocks. There are obviously a wide variety of different online and offline multiplayer modes, more than most average players would use (in a good way). There are so many ways to play, challenges, and customizations; players won’t run out of things to do for a long time.

When it comes to customization in fighting games, Mortal Kombat 11 is an easy contender for being king. It has an incredible number of costumes and colors for characters available. I would want a little more variety in actual costume geometry, but having loads of colors and a couple of costumes for each character is plenty. One of the best parts is almost every costume and color variant says directly where they can be obtained. If you want a blue Robot Cop or purple Sub Zero, go play these specific activities or earn these things. Also, each character has three different gear that can be equipped: weapons, masks, and other accessories. These three gear slots are primarily cosmetic changes, but as players use them over time, they unlock argument slots which can add additional bonuses. This is where I think the game really excels and adds a lot of needed depth in fighting games. None of the customizations are overpowered or unfair, they all just add a slight additional layer of player preference and customization. The last major part of customization is the abilities that can be equipped or removed. Being able to customize each character and have various builds brings a lot of entertainment and replayability into each character individually.

As I mentioned above, if you like fighting games, action games, or want some beautiful graphics to show off and bask in some bloody gore, this game fulfills all those and more. I’m seriously impressed with everything here. I think that this is quite the complete package and one of the best fighting games/content packages I’ve seen in a long time. If you are new to the franchise, you’re lucky to jump in at the pinnacle of Mortal Kombat, but veterans can skip this edition unless they don’t already have the DLCs and such.
