Review: MY HERO ACADEMIA: TEAM-UP MISSIONS Volume 1 Brings Fun Filler Stories to Manga
Earlier this month, VIZ Media released My Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions Volume 1. This is a spin-off series from Yoko Akiyama based on the hit manga by Kohei Horikoshi. VIZ was kind enough to send me a copy of the manga to read, and it’s been fun. You can purchase your copy now from book stores including Amazon and Barnes & Noble or even digital outlets including comiXology (affiliate link) and more.
Midoriya is excited for his first team-up mission until he learns that his team includes the explosive Bakugo. The pro hero they’ve been matched with is also a real wild card. Can this makeshift team cooperate, or will Midoriya’s first mission be his last?
First things first, it’s not a big deal if you’re not caught up on the anime or manga. I’ve only watched the first three seasons, and while I didn’t know all of the characters, enough information was provided for me to enjoy the one-shot stories being told. That being said, I would probably watch at least the first three seasons before reading Team-Up Missions.
The short stories in this manga are a lot of fun. They’re not heavy or rich with character moments (although there are a couple), but that’s what the main manga is for. We get to see some of our favorite students at UA High like Deku, Bakugo, and Ochako team up with pro heroes like Mirko. Something I appreciate is that we do get a break or two from Deku.
One treat that fans will enjoy is that Akiyama got to invent David Shield’s quirk. David was All Might’s sidekick and fans met him in the film My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, but his quirk was never revealed. It’s not impressive and is very silly, but it leads to a cute moment with his daughter Melissa. I won’t spoil it here, go and read Team-Up Missions to find out.
All in all, if you like My Hero Academia and just want some good stories that amount to nothing more than filler, Team-Up Missions can definitely scratch a small itch. The stories are a lot of fun and quick to read.
