Review: POWER RANGERS DECK-BUILDING GAME Is Morphinominal Fun

Renegade Game Studios recently released the Power Rangers Deck-Building Game (PRDBG). This is a game for 2-4 players where players are on two teams, the Rangers and the villains. I got to play a demo of the game several months ago, and with its release, Renegade was kind enough to send me a copy to review. You can purchase your own copy through your local game store, Renegade, or wherever you like to buy games with an MSRP of $45.

In this Deck-Building Game, some players will be Heroes and some will be Villains. You’ll start with a meager deck that will become increasingly powerful as the game progresses until you can unleash a powerful Megazord or Master attack. Play against one opponent or team up with a friend to take down the opposition. This Core Set will begin your collection with everything needed to play, but be prepared for more Rangers and Villains to come!

PRDBG is a really fun deck-building game. It can be played in 1v1, 2v1, or 2v2 battles. I’ve mostly played 1v1 and one 2v2 game, and sadly I haven’t been able to play any 2v1 games. Deck-building games in general can be hit or miss for some people. Some are designed and played in a way that leave some to feel like they’re just playing a fancy game of Solitaire. PRDBG is nothing like that. You are always interacting with the other player(s) in some fashion, and it helps add a lot of fun to the game.

At the beginning of the game, each player chooses a character, and they all play and feel very different. This is really good and adds a lot of variety to playing. Even some of the mechanics vary a little between the Rangers and villains which helps it feel even more like your character choice is unique. I do want to say that I originally thought some of the characters would suck. For instance, I was worried that Kimberly (Mighty Morphin Pink) wouldn’t be very good because her abilities and cards are all about Starter Cards which you typically want to get rid of as fast as you can to make room for better cards. However, if you play your cards right and have some luck in which cards show up for purchase, she can be really good! I even won with her! All of the characters have great potential, and given some good strategy and a bit of luck, you can win with anyone.

The game is designed by Matt Hyra and features fantastic art by Joana Lafuente. It’s a lot of fun to play not just because it has good mechanics, but also because it’s fun to look at the cards. I will warn you that the box says it takes 30-70 minutes to play, but on a first playthrough I found that it often took a lot longer than that. Once you know how to play though, it does speed up.

I love PRDBG and cannot wait for the expansions like the upcoming Zeo one. The more combat-like playstyle keeps you engaged and has you coming back for more. Even my wife who typically doesn’t like deck-building games really enjoyed this one. I would definitely recommend trying this one out, even if you’re not a fan of Power Rangers.
