Review: PUPPET MASTER: THE LITTLEST REICH Was One Hell of a Sick and Twisted Blood and Gore Party
For those of you who twisted horror fans that enjoy insane amounts of crazy blood and gore in their movies, you're going to love the hell out of Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich. Look, the Puppet Master film franchise isn't for the normal movie-going audiences. It's kind of a silly franchise, I know, but I can't help but enjoy these films! I love the campiness of them and how crazy brutal they can be in terms of blood, gore, and violence.
So, when I got invited to an early screening of Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich I had to go! I was already excited about the movie because it was written by the writer and director of Bone Tomahawk, S. Craig Zahler. I had to see what kind of demented story he came up with for the Puppet Master franchise!
Well, the story he came up with is set at a convention where a bunch of people who have been collecting these killer puppets over the years gathers together to auction them off. As you might imagine all hell breaks loose and the puppets come to life and go on a psychotic bloody killing spree of insanity.
The film centers around a man named Edgar (Thomas Lennon) who returns to his childhood home after being divorced to reassess his life. While he's rummaging through his deceased brother's old bedroom, he discovers a Blade puppet in mint condition. So, to grab some quick cash he sets off on a road trip to the convention in Oregon with his new girlfriend Ashley (Jenny Pellicer) and his comic book nerd friend Markowitz (Nelson Franklin) to sell the puppet. The convention is being put on to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the infamous Toulon Murders. As you might expect there are a lot of nutty characters.
Once the puppets come to life at the convention, there's no stopping the unbelievably berserk carnage that follows. If you're a fan of this franchise, you're in for a real treat because this might just be the most jacked-up film in the franchise. There are visuals burnt into my brain that cannot be unseen. I'm not going to spoil any these things for you, but they sure did come up with some over-the-top and unique death scenes. Seriously.... wow! There were some shocking scenes that had the audience bursting into laughter and had others left with their jaws dropping to the sticky floor of the theater.
The violence in this movie is relentless and they don't hold back. In fact, they had no problem crossing line with some things. They just went for it and you can tell from the audience that what they went for paid off. This is certainly not a film for anyone that is easily offended.
If you aren't familiar with the Puppet Master franchise, you need to know before watching this that these films are meant to be campy. This movie knows what it is and they have a shit ton of fun playing around with that. The whole campiness aspect of the film is what makes these kinds of movies so damn fun to watch. If you enjoy watching classic 80s B horror films, you'll probably dig this. But, there's also the chance it just might be too much for you.
The ridiculous dialogue, the holes in the plot, the choppy editing, and all the things that don't make sense... it's all part of the films deranged charm. I can't wait to see more of the films that Fangoria makes! You can watch the trailer for Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich below.
