Review: THE ALEX ROSS MARVEL COMICS POSTER BOOK is Stunning

The Alex Ross Marvel Comics Poster Book is available now from your favorite book stores. Inside, fans will find 35 art prints by famous comic book artist Alex Ross for Marvel Entertainment and they are gorgeous. Abram ComicArts was kind enough to send me a copy and if you love Marvel comics, this is incredible.

From Angel to Wolverine, all your favorite Marvel Comics super heroes are featured in this exclusive collection of painted portraits by Alex Ross—one of most respected and influential artists working in comics. This first-ever collection of these iconic images includes 35 ready-to-frame, removeable art prints—perfect for longtime Marvel fans and those just discovering these classic heroes for the first time—as well as commentary by Ross, preliminary sketches, and a bonus four-page gatefold of the portraits, assembled into a mural that was commissioned for Marvel’s New York City offices. These heroic posters showcase the Marvel super heroes as you’ve never seen them before—as realistic as any on the silver screen—painted in the award-winning, breathtaking style that made Alex Ross famous.

Ross is a bit of a legend in the world of comic books and these prints do not disappoint. There’s a bit of a mix where some characters are posed more dynamically than others, but it helps create a different vibe for each one. At the beginning of the book, Ross talks about how the project came about as Marvel Comics wanted him to do a mural and he ended up doing these different poses and putting them together. There’s more to it, but you can buy the book and read about it yourself. In addition to the 35 pages that you can pull out and frame, there’s also a poster that features all of the art in a mural format.

Another cool thing about each of the pages is that on the back, Ross provides some commentary on each character. For instance, for Wolverine, he talks about how he was created and how John Romita Sr. designed him originally. A lot of his comments talk about the evolution of the characters up to his design. It’s really fun to read through.

The only complaint I have about the book is that some of the art has a lot more white space than I would’ve liked. For example, Spider-Woman is crouching and takes up less than half the page. This looks great when combined with all the other heroes, but on her own, it feels like a lot of wasted space.

If you like Marvel comics and you want some awesome art to put up on your wall, I highly recommend The Alex Ross Marvel Comics Poster Book. I need some more wall space now. It’s an incredible buy for $24.99.
