Review: THE CURSED is a Unique and Well-Made Supernatural Werewolf Horror Movie
If there’s one new movie that was recently released in theaters that you should take the time to see and support, it’s the supernatural horror film The Cursed. I went and saw this movie the day after I watched Uncharted, which I did not care for. That movie sucked and was a waste of time.
After watching that, watching The Cursed was a breath of fresh air. Yeah, it’s another werewolf movie, but this movie offers a unique take on the werewolf lore. It also tells a great story with a wonderfully written script. The movie was written and directed by Sean Ellis (Cashback, The Broken, Metro Manila) and this is a film that we should be supporting so that we can see more films like this get made.
The film is set in France in the 1800s, and the story deals with a gypsy curse and a werewolf that is terrorizing a small rural village. The story follows a family whose son goes missing after a series of eerie and strange events. A pathologist named John McBride (Boyd Holbrook) arrives in the remote country village to investigate the missing boy and an attack by a wild animal. But, he ends up uncovering a much deeper, sinister force that has the manor and its townspeople in its grip.
I loved the tone of the film and the visualization of the story. The movie was beautifully shot and it was filled with creepy and cool imagery. The Cursed also delivered some great scares and thrills in the way that Jaws does. It mostly focuses on building the suspense of the story and keeping the werewolf in the shadows until the third act of the film when the story kicks into all-out edge-of-your-seat intensity.
The movie isn’t perfect, though. The film has some pacing issues and the way the story was structured felt a little off, especially with the bookends of the story involving a subplot of one of the characters that could have been cut out. But, other than that, I enjoyed the hell out of the movie and I hope people go see it!
I should also mention that the movie is brutal in its violence and there’s plenty of crazy blood and gore that the horror movie fans will enjoy. But, the most important aspect of the film is that it’s a great story and a unique take on the werewolf genre. I like that it tried something different, and it succeeded in it!
