Review: THE DRAGON PRINCE: THROUGH THE MOON is a Great Continuation of the Series While We Wait for Season 4

I have enjoyed the first three seasons of The Dragon Prince on Netflix and am looking forward to the next several. Now, the brand-new original graphic novel, Through the Moon, from Peter Wartman and Xanthe Bouma is now out and Scholastic was kind enough to send me a copy to read. If you’re a fan of The Dragon Prince, I think you’re going to love this. Now, it should be noted that this is the first of an undisclosed number. It takes place between the third and fourth seasons of the show and it’s unclear how necessary it will be to read between the seasons. I’m going to do my best to avoid spoilers, but I’m sure that some will come up, so be warned!

Through the Moon features some great art by Bouma and it highlights our main group of characters. The problem is that Rayla is not happy. She can’t help but feel that Lord Viren is still alive somewhere and it leads to an interesting adventure back at the Moon Nexus. We get to see Lujanne as well which is always a treat. The adventure is definitely something that we would see in the show. All the characters are written the same, the dialogue feels fitting, and it really feels like an arc of the series that was adapted for the graphic novel format.

Sadly, it’s unclear how necessary the graphic novel will be as the show goes on. My hope is that the events will be recapped in the next season. I like the idea of this providing additional material, but I don’t want it to be vital information. I don’t want it to be a thing where you have to read the graphic novel to see where the story goes, but if you do read, you should get something like an inside joke or something.

Now, we’re going to get a little spoiler-y. During the events of the graphic novel, Rayla is worried Viren’s not actually dead and low and behold, she finds this to be true. This is why I am genuinely curious as to whether this is something that fans will really need to read or if they’ll do a recap in the show or what when it comes back with season 4. This is the biggest problem I have is that I’m worried this won’t be explored in the series and possibly lead to some confusion.
