Review: The New SCOOB! Is Getting Mixed Reviews, But It Was a Blast in My Book!

My family and I sat down this weekend to enjoy the new Scooby-Doo flick, Scoob!. My kids had been looking forward to it for months, and my husband and I were just hoping it would be fun enough for us to enjoy. The movie, which was a modern take on the classic characters, starred Frank Welker, who returned to provide the voice of Scooby-Doo, Zac Efron as Fred, Amanda Seyfried as Daphne, Gina Rodriguez as Velma, and Will Forte as Shaggy. It was directed by Tony Cervone (Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo), and also starred Tracy Morgan as Captain Caveman and Kiersey Clemons as Dee Dee Skyes. Jason Isaacs voiced the villain Dick Dastardly, and Mark Wahlberg voiced Blue Falcon’s son, with Ken Jeong as Blue Falcon’s sidekick, Dynomutt.

The main cast was great, but the cameos took the fun to the next level! We saw appearances from Simon Cowell, Ira Glass, Christina Hendricks, and Henry Winkler, and each was as funny as the last. The movie had jokes at every turn, and I loved the way they brought the characters into the modern day. The animation in the film was also some of the best I have ever seen! I found myself so captivated by it. The story had a lot of heart, and I loved the positive message about friendship and forgiveness.

This wasn’t a shared feeling across the board here at GeekTyrant. Both Joey and Tommy watched Scoob! with their families as well. Tommy’s sentiment was that “Scoob! was fun and a decent film, but a bad Scooby-Doo movie.” And Joey said his girls turned it off halfway through and turned on an old Scooby-Doo movie, because they are purists who were not buying into the new look.

I have to admit, I watched Scooby-Doo as a kid, but was not as invested or fanatic as other fans. I probably would not have watched this movie without my kids, so my standard was low going in. But I was so pleasantly surprised, and I’m really glad we purchased the movie, as I’m enjoying it on in the background a day later. My husband, a much bigger fan of the original series and movies than me, also enjoyed it incredibly. So it’s hard for me to gauge whether or not you’ll like it. But I think it’s worth a watch! Check it out, and let us know which camp you land in.
