Review: THE OUTFIT Is a Great Mob Film and One of My Favorite Movies of the Year

I finally got around to watching The Outfit. This is a movie that hasn’t had much marketing behind it, but I was sold on it thanks to the trailer that was released. I liked the concept of the story, and it had an impressive list of acting talent which includes Mark Rylance (Ready Player One, The Trial of the Chicago 7), Zoey Deutch (Zombieland: Double Tap, The Politician), Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf, Love and Monsters), Johnny Flynn (Emma.), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Old), and more.

I’m happy to report that The Outfit is a freakin’ fantastic mob flick! It completely blew away my expectations, and I’ve gotta tell ya, it’s one of my favorite movies of 2022. I was hooked from the opening scene and the journey it took me on was filled with great and interesting characters, and the story takes the audience through some thrilling and unexpected twists and turns.

The story follows an English cutter, not a tailer, a cutter, played by Rylance, who once used his talent and skills to craft suits on London's world-famous Savile Row. But after a personal tragedy, he made his way to Chicago to start a new life and opens up a crafting suit shop in a rough part of town where he creates these amazing suits and some of his best clients are a family of vicious gangsters that are making their way up the ranks in Chicago.

That’s all I’m going to give you, if you want more you can watch the trailer below. But, if you haven’t seen the trailer, just skip it and go straight to watching the movie. I promise you won’t be sorry. Everyone in the film offers great performances, but Rylance was spectacular and in my opinion, he delivered one of the best performances of his career! I can only hope he’s recognized for it come award season next year. He was just awesome.

One other thing I loved about the movie is that the whole thing is set in one location… the shop. I love movies that can take one single setting and managed to tell a completely captivating story with it. This film accomplishes that. The film was directed by The Imitation Game writer Graham Moore, who made his feature directorial debut with this film from a script he wrote with Johnathan McClain. He absolutely killed it! What a great and impressive first feature film.

The movie came out last weekend so it’s still in theaters for you to enjoy. I highly recommend that you go see it! This is a movie you don’t want to miss.
