Review: WOMEN OF MARVEL #1 Offers Fun and Brief One-Shot Stories to Read
Women of Marvel is a series of comics meant to not only highlight female characters in the Marvel universe, but also female creators. Women of Marvel #1 released this week and features a variety of short stories that typically last only a couple of pages. Marvel was kind enough to provide a copy for me to read and enjoy. WOMEN OF MARVEL #1 will feature incredible adventures spotlighting Marvel’s most iconic heroines told by an all-female lineup of incredible talent from throughout the entertainment industry. Starring She-Hulk, Peggy Carter, Jean Grey, Gamora, and many more, this collection of all-new stories will take readers on a thrilling ride through the Marvel Universe from the far reaches of space to Krakoa.
Women of Marvel features an introduction by Louise Simonson and stories written by Nadia Shammas, Elsa Sjunneson, Sophie Campbell, Anne Toole, Natasha Alterici, Mariko Tamaki, and Zoraida Córdova and illustrated by Kei Zama, Eleonora Carlini, Skylar Patridge, Joanna Estep, Maria Fröhlich, Peach Momoko, Rachael Stott, Nina Vakueva, Marika Cresta, and June Brigman. The issue is over-sized, with over 40 pages to read.
Because there are so many creators, you’ll find each story is very different both in story and in the art. There are definitely some stories that you’ll enjoy more than others. I, for one, am partial to the first story, “Mani,” which sees Lady Deathstroke get a manicure and “Wild Rhino Chase” where She-Hulk is going after Rhino. I also appreciate how a lot of the stories sound more mundane, but are still very fun. Also, I appreciate how not all of them involve action moments, but when there’s action, it’s pretty awesome.
One thing that kind of bothers me is that only one character on the cover even makes an appearance in the entire volume. While all of them are awesome, I would’ve rather had characters like Lady Deathstroke, She-Hulk, and Mystique on the cover than Elektra and Storm who don’t show up.
Women of Marvel #1 is not for everyone. However, if you want very short stories focused on female characters, this is a fun little read.
