Rian Johnson Discusses What He Was Trying To Accomplish With The Ending to STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI
Rian Johnson is out making the press rounds for his new movie, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story, and whenever he makes the press rounds, the people interviewing him always ask him about Star Wars.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is easily one of the most polarizing Star Wars films that has been made. Regardless of what people think about it, good or bad, one thing most of us can agree on is the sequel trilogy as a whole is kind of a mess, and it does not tell very a strong story.
Johnson definitely tried to do something different with his part of the story, and it ended with kids playing with homemade Star Wars toys and a kid holding a broom like a lightsaber and staring up at the stars. I actually liked that ending as it was uplifting and hopeful.
When talking about that ending in an interview with The Atlantic, Johnson shed some light on what he was thinking when came up with it saying:
“In terms of the Star Wars movie I did, I tried to give it a hell of an ending. I love endings so much that even doing the middle chapter of the trilogy, I tried to give it an ending. A good ending that recontextualizes everything that came before it and makes it a beautiful object unto itself—that’s what makes a movie a movie. It feels like there’s less and less of that. This whole poisonous idea of creating [intellectual property] has completely seeped into the bedrock of storytelling. Everyone is just thinking, How do we keep milking it? I love an ending where you burn the Viking boat into the sea.”
What did you think about the ending of The Last Jedi? What are your thoughts on what Johnson had to say about what he was looking to accomplish with it?
