Rian Johnson Says He Didn't Know Who Rey's Parents Were Going into THE FORCE AWAKENS
When Star Wars: The Last Jedi is released, we will either find out who Rey's parents are or we won't and will have to wait until Episode IX. Either way, Daisy Ridley says she already knows because J.J. Abrams let her in on the secret during the production of The Force Awakens. But in an interview with Rolling Stone The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson revealed that information was never revealed in that movie and Johnson wasn’t told anything regarding that part of the story and was given free reign:
“I wasn’t given any directive as to what that had to be. I was never given the information that she is this or she is that.” Ridley added, “I thought what I was told in the beginning is what it is.”
It's pretty obvious that someone isn’t telling the truth, or there is some confusion on the matter. But the Rolling Stone reporter suspects that Johnson does know.
The idea that Johnson and Abrams somehow landed on the same answer does seem to suggest that Rey’s parents aren’t some random, never-before-seen characters. All that said, Abrams cryptically hints there may have been more coordination between him and Johnson than the latter director has let on, so who knows what’s going on here – they may be messing with us to preserve one of Abrams’ precious mystery boxes.
It does make sense that Johnson wouldn't say anything because if he told the truth and was also given a blank slate with the film, he’d be confirming that we will find out in The Last Jedi. And he can’t do that. I guess we will find out when Episode VIII arrives in theaters in a few weeks. The truth will finally be revealed or we will have to wait another year to find out.
