Rian Johnson Says He Hopes STAR WARS Brings in "Fresh Voices and Filmmakers" to Tell "New Stories in That World"
Filmmaker Rian Johnson is not only a Star Wars fan, but has played in that sandbox himself, having made Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017). He marks that accomplishment as one of the most exciting of his career, and he was supposed to return to the franchise to create his own full trilogy, but his other directing endeavors got in the way. Johnson went on to make the Knives Out film trilogy, as well as the series Poker Face, but he says he would love to return someday.
While attending the Sundance Film Festival this weekend, Johnson was asked by Variety what he thought about Kathleen Kennedy’s exit as the head of Lucasfilm. Johnson said of Kennedy and the studio:
“I love Kathy. I am excited now to see what she does next. As a ‘Star Wars’ fan, the most exciting thing for me is always seeing when they bring in fresh voices and fresh filmmakers to come in and tell new stories in that world. That’s what I am looking forward to seeing more happen.”
Johnson went on to say of his experience making The Last Jedi, “I had the time of my life doing it. I am now an even bigger Star Wars fan than I was when going into it. I would feel blessed if that were to ever happen [again].”
