Rian Johnson Says He is Open to Jar Jar Binks And Other STAR WARS Characters Appearing In New Trilogy

It wasn't too long ago that Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson will create a brand new Star Wars trilogy. Ever since then fans have been chomping at the bit for details about the plot, setting, and characters.

But it is so early into the process that even Johnson himself still isn't sure what exactly will happen in the new storyline, but he does seem open to any possibility... including the return of Jar Jar Binks.

In a recent interview with Yahoo!, Johnson was asked if old characters could return in his new trilogy.

"I'm just starting to think about it, and get into, so who knows? I want to keep it just totally wide open in terms of possibilities. That's what's so exciting about it right now, just the notion of one story, three movies, the sky's the limit. We can really do anything. The possibilities are thrilling."

He even went as far as saying that he would be open to the prospect of everyone's favorite character, Jar Jar Binks returning.

"I would be down with bringing old Jar Jar back — we'll see," he said, laughing.

In all reality, it's not very likely we will see Jar Jar in the trilogy, what is noteworthy, however, is that Johnson is open to bringing in existing characters to his new narrative. When Lucasfilm initially announced the trilogy, they made it sound like the new saga would consist of entirely new characters in an entirely new area never before seen in the Star Wars galaxy.

Johnson did add that he is very excited for the challenge of beginning a new storyline in the Star Wars galaxy:

"Right now it's just excitement. It's like the possibility of a brand new story, 3 movies, just go anywhere and tell anything, meet some new folks, see some new places. That to me, I mean just, in the Star Wars world? I'm like yeah, I'm bubbling with excitement about it."

In just a few days we'll have a much better idea of what Johnson is capable of in the Galaxy Far, Far Away when Star Wars: The Last Jedi drops into theaters on December 15.
