Rian Johnson Still Meets With Lucasfilm to Talk About His Future STAR WARS Project

It’s been several years since it was announced that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would be developing a new original Star Wars trilogy. A lot of fans think that those movies will never get made, but Johnson still regularly meets with Lucasfilm and talks to Kathleen Kennedy about his project. It sounds like these Star Wars films will eventually happen, it’s just a matter of time and scheduling.

In a recent interview with Empire magazine Johnson shared: “I’ve stayed close to Kathleen [Kennedy] and we get together often and talk about it. It’s just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished, if I couldn’t get back in that sandbox at some point.”

It seems like scheduling has always been the main factor behind these films not moving forward. Lucasfilm has been trying to figure out what they are doing with the future Star Wars films. I’m still not sure that they’ve quite figured that out. It’s been said that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film would be the next one to get made, but who knows!?

When previously talking about his plan to explore new characters in his films he said: “We’re doing something that steps beyond the legacy characters. What does that look like? To me, the blue sky element of it is what was most striking about it. I know the way that I’m coming at it, and what’s fun about it for everyone in George Lucas’s films, is figuring out, ‘What’s the next step?’ It really makes you think and figure out what the essence of Star Wars is for me and what that will look like moving forward.”

We’ll just have to wait and see when the stars align for Lucasfilm and Johnson to start working on his Star Wars project. Johnson is developing a couple more Knives Out films, so it’ll probably be a few more years before he jumps back into the Star Wars universe.
