Rich Moore Provides a Flawed Argument as to Why Leia is Not Included in the WRECK IT RALPH 2 Princess Scene

One of the most talked about scenes that we’ve seen from Ralph Breaks the Internet is the scene were Vanellope meets the Disney Princesses in the trailer. I enjoy watching these clips and am excited to see all the context surrounding them. Apparently, people are wondering why Princess Leia isn’t among the group of princesses. Co-director Rich Moore gave an answer to a group of journalists that went something like this:

We decided... I mean there are a lot of princesses that are from Disney movies that are not part of the canonized Disney princesses, you know, and I don’t know how they’re chosen. I don’t know how it goes on. I think it’s kinda like the Vatican where smoke comes out of a chimney. ‘And Moana is now a Disney princess.’ So we decided we’re going to use the canonized group of princesses, known as the Disney Princesses. Not that we don’t love Princess Leia and Kida [from Atlantis: The Lost Empire] and Meg [from Hercules] and Esmerelda [from The Hunchback Of Notre Dame]. But we decided we’re going to go with the official Disney princesses.

There are problems with his answer. Before I explain what those are though, I want it to be clear that I agree with Pixar to not include Leia. I just don’t agree with Moore’s response. Moore’s response states that there is a canonized group of princesses that they wanted to use for the film. It is true that such a list exists. However, there are only 11 members of said canon group and there are 14 princesses not including Vanellope in the room. That means that three women in that room don’t belong. Those three are Anna, Elsa, and Moana. You can go to the official Disney Princess website and see that these three women are not on the list. So, using Moore’s argument either he has to kick those three out, or he has no argument.

Like I said earlier, I do agree that Leia should not be included in this scene. Co-writer Pamela Ribon shared what I consider to be a better argument for not including Leia and it’s the same stance that I and I’m sure many others have.

I really thought of the princesses that walk through Disneyland as the Disney Princesses, Disney animation specifically, you know, because that’s where I feel like Vanellope is of this house, and she gets to stand next to the same princesses that this building made... I wouldn’t have thought in this room you’d have Princess Leia because she didn’t seem like who Vanellope was talking to in that version.

Leia shouldn’t be included because she wasn’t created as an animated princess in a Disney film. That being said, they really should’ve included Princess Eilonwy and Kida. Do you think Leia should’ve been included in the princess group? Are you shocked to learn there are only 11 Disney Princesses?

Ralph Breaks the Internet hits theaters November 21, 2018.
