Richard Lewis, a Titan of Comedy, Passes Away at 76
The world of comedy lost one of its most hilarious stars as Richard Lewis, revered for his self-deprecating humor and as a staple on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, passed away at his Los Angeles home following a heart attack. At 76, Lewis leaves behind a legacy that shaped an era of stand-up comedy and television, leaving fans and peers to mourn the loss of a comedic genius.
Lewis's publicist, Jeff Abraham, confirmed the tragic news, marking the end of a wonderful career that spanned decades and influenced countless comedians with his honesty, neuroticism, and relentless wit. Known for his all-black attire and a perpetual state of existential angst, Lewis turned his insecurities into comedic art, and his comedy was so laughably relatable.
In April 2023, Lewis shared his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, and despite the challenges he faced, Lewis's spirit and dedication to comedy never waned, as he continued to entertain and inspire.
Lewis's portrayal of a fictionalized version of himself on Curb Your Enthusiasm alongside long-time friend Larry David became a cornerstone of his career. His on-screen chemistry with David was a highlight of the show, and they always had me busting up into laughter.
Abraham said, “His wife, Joyce Lapinsky, thanks everyone for all the love, friendship and support and asks for privacy at this time.”
Larry David shared his thoughts, saying: “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”
We lost an incredibly talented individual today, and over the course of his career he brought so much joy and laughter into people’s lives at the expense of life's absurdities, and his work and comedy will continue to influence and entertain for generations to come.
We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and fans who found solace and joy in his unique ability to turn life’s challenges into comedic gold.
