Richard Linklater's Next Film is a Coming-of-Age Story Set Around The Moon Landing in 1969
Writer and director Richard Linklater is in the process of developing his next film project, and he recently revealed some new details regarding it during an interview with The Houston Chronicle. I enjoy Linklater's film work, he's a great director that has made some fantastic films that depict youth culture during different eras. The Before trilogy, Dazed and Confused, Everybody Want's Some, and Boyhood all show off his talent.
In this recent interview, the filmmaker reveals that his next movie will be another coming-of-age story set in Houston, Texas in 1969. The story will revolve around the historic moon landing. According to the report, Linklater was inspired to make this movie while shooting Boyhood. He "began thinking about his own childhood and that pivotal summer when he was watching man walk on the moon just weeks before entering third grade."
The story will be told from the kid's point-of-view, and we can expect a great soundtrack featuring what Linklater's calls some "regional hits." The director explains:
“You had so much going on in Houston at once: NASA, the Medical Center, the Astrodome… There was a communal atmosphere. You had all these kids with parents working at NASA for a common goal.”
Linklater and his team are also actively looking for old home videos and archival footage from that era to feature in the film to give the movie some authenticity. In regards to that, Linklater says, "There is no wrong material, as long as it's from Houston in the 1960s we want to see it." Here's are some additional details on what they are looking for:
“Director Richard Linklater needs your Houston area photos, videos from the 1960s for a new movie. Have a home movie from Astroworld or the Astrodome, or a recording of your little brother with Kitirik? Did someone you know use a Kinescope to record the moon landing? If so, we want to see it and anything else that documents that era."
The filmmaker is hoping to have this new film released around the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 2019. Are you looking forward to seeing what Linklater does with this next film of his?
