Rick Moranis Will Reprise Dark Helmet in THE GOLDBERGS!
The Goldbergs has done some pretty incredible things over the years bringing 80s nostalgia into our homes with the wonderful stories that they tell. Now it seems like they have done the impossible! The creative team managed to get Rick Moranis to come out of his retirement from acting to reprise his role as Dark Helmet from the classic comedy Spaceballs!
The Goldbergs episode will obviously be Spaceballs-themed and apparently, it is creator Adam F. Goldberg's favorite episode of the entire series. It's a rare thing for Moranis to do something like this. According to USA Today, the actor will provide the voice of Dark Helmet, and here's a description of the episode that was provided:
Moranis voices the character in one of young film enthusiast Adam Goldberg’s dreams, as Adam (Sean Giambrone) "encounters Dark Helmet storming his bedroom to battle with the Schwartz," a play on Star Wars’ The Force, according to a description. Adam "promises to get a sequel to Spaceballs produced before waking up."
In 1997 Moranis quit acting to focus on his family after his wife passed away. Goldberg, who is said to have grown up a fan of Moranis and Brooks, "worked for several weeks to get a commitment from Moranis." Goldberg had this to say in a statement:
"I truly think Rick Moranis gave the most underrated and brilliant comedic performance in any ‘80s movie as Dark Helmet. I’ve been a lifelong fan of his work and became obsessed with having him reprise the role on my show. As an added bonus, maybe this even gets Spaceballs back in the conversation, and I can get my dream of helping make a sequel!"
I was a huge fan of Moranis back in the day and I've wondered if he would start to come back and do stuff like this again. It's pretty incredible that Goldberg was able to get him on board and that he will be back is Dark Helmet! This might just be my favorite news of the day!
