Ridley Scott Says It Would Be Stupid of Him Not to Direct GLADIATOR 2

After over 20 years Ridley Scott is going to direct a sequel to Gladiator. The first film never really needed a sequel, as it was a great standalone story. But, Scott seems eager to continue that story he started. During a recent interview on The Zoey Ball Breakfast Show, the filmmaker addressed Gladiator 2 saying:

"How could I not do that? It would be critically stupid of me not to do that, wouldn't it?"

Scott is going to start work in the sequel as soon has he’s finished shooting his Napoleon movie, Kitbag, with Jodie Comer and Joaquin Phoenix. As for the story that the sequel might tell, Producer Walter F. Parkes previously said that the story for the sequel would pick up “30 years later… 25 years later.” Three decades after the death of Russell Crowe’s character Maximus.

With Maximus not being a part of the sequel, It’s been reported that the sequel could follow the continuing story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), “The youth was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the weaselly son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius who murdered his father seized the throne and wound up in the gladiator ring with Maximus, who though mortally wounded, skewered the emperor before fading into the great beyond to reunite with his slain wife and son. Maximus saved the boy and his mother while avenging his own family, and left a strong impression on the young Lucius.”

As a fan of the first movie, I can’t help but be curious to see what kind of story the sequel will end up telling. Scott is excited about it, so whatever he does, I’m sure it’ll be good.
