Ridley Scott Says The Future of the ALIEN Franchise Will Focus More on Artificial Intelligence

Despite being 80 years old, Ridley Scott still has one of the busiest and most successful careers in Hollywood. He’s currently wrapping up reshoots on All the Money in the World in time to make its Dec. 22 release date. He's also beginning prep for his next film, adapted from the Don Winslow novel, The Cartel; and he has dozens of other projects in various stages of production. But many still call the Alien franchise his crown jewel, and as he told EW in a recent interview, it's something that is always on his mind.

“We are [going to make another], we are. I think what we have to do is gradually drift away from the alien stuff. People say, ‘You need more alien, you need more face pulling, need more chest bursting,’ so I put a lot of that in Covenant and it fitted nicely. But I think if you go again you need to start finding another solution that’s more interesting. I think AI is becoming much more dangerous and therefore more interesting.”

Alien: Covenant was an overall disappointment for most Alien fans, but it's undeniable that some of the film's best moments often included Michael Fassbender, who was doing double duty as good-or-bad androids David and Walter.

“Fassbender was an AI. Ian Holm [from Alien] was an AI; Roy Batty [from Blade Runner] was an AI; so was Rachael [from Blade Runner].”

So if you're hoping for more xenomorphs, chestbursters and facehuggers, you better not hold your breath. Scott has already said that he wants to get rid of the Xenomorphs; it seems that Artificial Intelligence is something that Scott really wants to pursue. He previously said:

“I think the evolution of the Alien himself is nearly over. But what I was trying to do was transcend and move to another story, which would be taken over by A.I.’s. The world that the AI might create as a leader if he finds himself on a new planet. We have actually quite a big layout for the next one.”

What do you guys think? Is this something that you would like to see?
