Ridley Scott Still Wishes He Would've Directed The Sequels To BLADE RUNNER and ALIEN
It’s no secret that director Ridley Scott wishes that he would have directed the sequels to Blade Runner and Alien. But, he’s still talking about it all these years later, and he obviously regrets not taking on these projects.
During an interview with Vanity Fair about his upcoming sequel Gladiator II, the filmmaker talked about his career and the film industry, and he sees not directing the sequels to Alien and Blade Runner as a missed opportunity.
Scott said: "I was slow out the starting gate. I mean, I should have done the sequels to Alien and to Blade Runner. You change over the years. At that time, I didn't want to go through it again. So Jim Cameron came in—and then David Fincher—on Alien."
Scott then shared that the producers and studios like Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox didn't really give him any choice on what happened with sequels.
He explained: "I'm the author of two franchises. Most directors in Hollywood—certainly, let's say, at my level—don't let that stuff go.
“But I did Alien as my second movie, so I didn't have much choice. And Blade Runner was my third movie. So, I had no choice because I had very tough partners. It was kind of 'Welcome to Hollywood.'"
in regard to how the sequels were handled, Scott said"I was never told or asked, You can imagine I wasn't happy."
Regardless, both Aliens and Blade Runner 2049 ended up being great freakin’ films! The filmmakers who did make those movies did an amazing job, and there’s a chance they would’ve been very different had Scott directed them.
While Scott isn’t happy he didn’t get to direct those movies, I think that fans are happy with how they turned out. I’m fine with the fact Scott didn’t direct them.
