RIVERS OF LONDON THE ROLEPLAYING GAME Will Let You Solve Supernatural Mysteries

The Rivers of London: The Roleplaying Game core rulebook is available on PDF now. The game is based on the urban fantasy book series by Ben Aaronovitch in which Officers of the Folly explore the magic tainted city of London and solve intricate, arcing mysteries. From the good people at Chaosium, Rivers of London lets you take on the role of a newly recruited member of the London Metropolitan Police Service’s special magic branch, aka “the Folly”. Solve mysteries, catch criminals, and come to grips with the “demi-monde” aka those permanently changed by magic. Developer Lynne Hardy says:

As a designer, people often ask what your dream project would be. Of course, for me, that's Rivers of London. What I've enjoyed most about the project is getting to work with Ben [Aaronovitch], Paul [Fricker], and the rest of the creative team to bring Peter Grant's world to the gaming table.

I'm really looking forward to fans of the novels discovering they can play their own members of the Folly, and fans of our games discovering a new and exciting world to solve mysteries in," Hardy said. "Your main hope as a designer is that people will have fun with your game - I think they will with this one!

If you are familiar with Call of Cthulhu and RuneQuest then you should have a good grasp of the basic mechanics of the game. Rivers of London is based on the same basic roleplaying system and honestly sounds like a great mystery game. I feel confident in assuming the game is less punishing and brutal than Call of Cthulhu but you still get to investigate and solve supernatural mysteries. I haven’t read the book series this is based on, but considering its younger reading age I’m going to say this is probably a really good introduction to mystery type roleplaying games. This is one that I would definitely consider checking out. You can get it now from Chaosium and DriveThruRPG (Affiliate Link) for $29.99.
