Rob McElhenney's MINECRAFT Movie Gets a Release Date
It's so weird to write the phrase "Rob McElhenney's Minecraft movie" and actually have it be a factual statement and not a bizarre fever dream, but it's true — the creator, star, and writer of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is actually directing a movie based on the mega-popular video game.
The last time we wrote about the film was almost a year ago and we haven't heard anything since, but today, Warner Bros. and Mojang COO Vu Bui announced the film's new release date:
“Hello future Minecraft movie-goers! I know you’ve been thinking just about every day, ‘When’s the Minecraft movie coming out?’ Luckily for you, we can finally say! The Minecraft movie will be released on May 24, 2019! The film will also be released in 3D & IMAX. Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right? That’s it for now, but as time goes on we’ll share loads more. Loads!”
It's still unclear to me exactly how McElhenney intends to translate the blocky aesthetic of the game to the big screen (and what kind of storyline he plans to follow), but at least now we have a date for when we'll find out for sure.
