Robert Downey Jr. Gives a Surprising Answer When Asked If He Prefers Playing IRON MAN or DOCTOR DOOM

Two of the biggest shocking moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe were when Iron Man died in Avengers: Endgame (2019), and when it was revealed at Comic-Con 2024 that Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to Marvel to play Doctor Doom in the films Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Now that the release of Doomsday is just months away, and Secret Wars has begun shooting, Downey was asked at D23 whether he’s preferred playing Tony Stark/Iron Man, or Doctor Victor Von Doom.

He responded, “I will say Doom, for now, because I got to really observe what I’ve been missing the whole time, just everybody else.”

He went on to elaborate, touching on some new relationships as well as ones with long-running history, particularly with Haley Atwell and Chris Evans, saying, “I think that in Doomsday, what happens with this key relationship is so exciting and unexpected and beautiful.”

He went on to talk about what it’s like to go from the universe’s biggest hero to its biggest villain, saying, “It was really weird being the guy—everyone else is hanging out, they’re the good heroes, and I’m [in] this mask and this hood. I’m like, ‘They’re all on one side of the camera, and I guess they’re all mad at me or something,’” he said.

It will be a ton of fun to see RDJ in this new capacity, and see what will happen when our mightiest heroes go up against him. Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theatres on December 18th, and tickets are on sale now.
