Robert Downey Jr. Says He Thinks Hawkeye is The Only One That Can Beat Thanos

While all of us speculate about Hawkeye's role in Avengers: Infinity War, Robert Downey Jr. shares his thoughts on the character and how he thinks he comes into play. You may think that Downey Jr. knows what happens in the film, but remember, the cast of the film were given fake scripts so things wouldn't be spoiled. During a fan event in Singapore, the actor amusingly said:

"Here's my guess - because I haven't read the script [Laughter]. Because Jeremy Renner is not in the poster, I think he's the only one that can beat Thanos! I think it's Hawkeye! [Cheers] No, I think it's Jeremy: only Jeremy can defeat him [laughs]."

Then director Joe Russo jokingly yells out, "Hawkeye is Thanos!" That certainly got the fans riled up! I've actually seen some fans speculate in the comments that Hawkeye might be the one to run in and save the day.

I don't think that Downey Jr. would have said that if that was actually the case, though. I think he's just being playful with the fans and the situation.

However, Hawkeye's absence from every piece of marketing in the film and the fact that Jeremey Renner isn't even credited on the poster is just building up the mystery of the character. Joe Russo previously talked about Hawkeye's absence in the marketing and explains that the story that they've come up with Hawkeye is a "long play". He says:

"We keep saying, 'Patience is a virtue.' We did not forget the twice-nominated Jeremy Renner. We cooked up a story for him that is a little bit of a long play. Not a short play."

The Russos offered a little more of a tease regarding Hawkeye, saying:

"Coming out of Civil War, he’s in the same position that Cap and Falcon are at the end of that movie. And Ant-Man. Coming into this movie, you know… Characters on Cap’s side coming out of the Civil War, some made certain decisions and others made other decisions that led to different paths in them dealing with oversight in this movie in a different way. So Hawkeye’s on his own journey in this movie."

All of our questions will be answered in less than two weeks! The movie hits theaters on April 27th! If Hawkeye does show up in the film, you know that the crowd is going to go nuts!
