Robert Downey Jr. Says He's "Surprisingly Open Minded to the Idea" of Returning to Play IRON MAN in the MCU
It has been five years since Robert Downey Jr. ended his reign as Tony Star/Iron Man in the MCU. For over a decade, we got to see the story arc of the character play out, where he battled villains, made lifelong friends, had a family, and ultimately sacrificed himself for the fate of the world.
His death was felt deeply by fans, and though some have said a return would cheapen his story finale, it has been rumored that Marvel boss Kevin Feige may turn to the original cast of Avengers in the upcoming phases to give fans a grand reunion.
Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow would probably variants due to their deaths on Earth-616.
When asked by his friend and fellow actor Jodie Foster in a Variety Actors on Actors interview how he felt about possibly returning to the role, RDJ explained:
“It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am. I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea.”
He went on to joke that he still looks good enough to do it, and passed on the same compliment to Foster, saying:
“Between Nyad and [True Detective: Night Country] and, for me, Oppenheimer and then Sympathizer, it really is crazy because we look pretty good. I was actually looking at the stills we were taking, making sure: ‘Do we still look kind of OK?’ I’m like, ‘We look pretty good.'”
They do both look great! Downey and Foster are two of the best actors around, and I love the projects they star in. We don’t know for sure if RDJ will return to the MCU, but I’d be glad to see him back. What do you think? What, he’ll probably show up in Deadpool & Wolverine.
