Robert Downey Jr. Says OPPENHEIMER Is the Best Film He's Even Been In

Robert Downey Jr. has been in a lot of great films over the course of his long career, and he’s delivered some incredible performances in those films. There are a lot of movies to choose from that fans might consider his best film, some of my favorites are Chaplin, Zodiac, and Tropic Thunder.

But, during a recent interview with IndieWire, he said that Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is the best film he’s been in. Before the ongoing actor’s strike went into effect, the cast of the film appeared at the U.K. premiere and this is what he said:

“Just going to flat out say it: This is the best film I’ve ever been in, and I cannot wait for you all to experience it.”

That’s pretty awesome praise. I have no doubt the movie is going to be incredible, and I can’t wait to watch it! Nolan previously talked about working with Downey Jr. on the film saying:

“He’s one of our great actors, and though a generation of kids know what a great movie star he is, they’ve not seen his subtlety and brilliance. I wanted to get him to do something completely different, to lose himself in another human being. When was the last time we’ve seen that? ‘Chaplin’? Directors are very aware of how talented Downey is, but because of his incredible energy that can punch through the screen, finding the right thing for him is difficult.”

The epic thriller will thrust audiences into “the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.” Nolan is such a strong storyteller and this movie is going to be something special, it just looks like in incredible movie that tells a fascinating story.

The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who ran the Manhattan Project that led to the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II. He is joined by Emily Blunt as his wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

The movie also stars Florence Pugh as psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie plays theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano plays Robert Serber, Josh Hartnett plays pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence, along with Rami Malek, Kenneth BranaghDane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, and Matthew Modine

The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. Oppenheimer is filmed in a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography including, for the first time ever, sections in IMAX® black and white analogue photography.

Oppenheimer opens in theaters on July 21, 2023.
