Robert Pattinson Initially Tried to Impersonate a Steve-O From JACKASS in MICKEY 17 and It Didn't Work
Robert Pattinson is no stranger to playing interesting characters that allows him to be creative and try new things, but one think he tried out may have been a little too bold for Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming sci-fi epic, Mickey 17.
While preparing for the role of Mickey Barnes, Pattinson decided he wanted to channel Steve-O, the daredevil star of the Jackass franchise.
In an interview with Elle, Pattinson shared his admiration for Steve-O’s fearlessness, noting that he found a unique parallel between the stuntman’s outrageous antics and Mickey’s own dangerous role in the story.
Pattinson explained: “[Steve-O is] really brave [without] acknowledging that it’s bravery. The first time I did it, Bong was just like, ‘Whoa—what’s that voice you’re doing?’”
The voice debut happened during a script read-through, with about 40 people in the room, and the reaction from everyone in the room told Pattinson that it wasn’t going to work.
He recalled: “Every single person looks up, and they’re like, ‘Oh! Oh, you’re doing a thing?’” It quickly became clear to him that he might’ve “taken too large a swing” with the impression.
Regardless, Pattinson is doing something different with the character and it’s unlike anything we’ve seen from the actor before.
The film centers on Mickey Barnes, a man who signs up to be an "expendable"—a clone who takes on dangerous missions and is replaced with a new copy every time he dies. Things take a chaotic turn when the 17th and 18th versions of Mickey unexpectedly meet.
Pattinson’s attempt at a Steve-O impression may not have made it into the film, but I like that the actor was willing to go completely off the wall.
Reagardless, Mickey 17 looks like it’s going to be a ton of fun!
