Robert Pattinson on the Importance of Lighting in THE BATMAN So His Suit Doesn't Look Like a Halloween Costume

If it weren’t for good lighting, Batman wouldn’t look as badass as he does in the movies. Lighting adds so much to the film’s visual tone and if it’s not done properly, superhero costumes like the one Batman wears could look like an unimpressive Halloween costume.

The Batman star Robert Pattinson recently talked about the importance of lighting when shooting the film and how director Matt Reeves would be shooting multiple takes of a scene just to make sure that lighting was right. It’s not the acting that Reeves was worried about, it was the lighting. The film's cinematographer Greig Fraser (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Dune) told Pattinson, "The two most difficult things to light are Darth Vader's helmet and the cowl."

Pattinson when on to explain how the lighting on the film when he was all decked out in his Batman suit affected his acting telling MovieMaker:

"There's a whole different language, body language, you have to learn to make [the Batman suit] do what you want it to do. If you look too much into the light, it looks completely ridiculous, and you're wearing a Halloween costume. But if you're like two millimeters down, it's like — oh, that's completely totemic, and like it looks exactly how it's supposed to look. But to learn how to feel that and learn how to react to how the light hits it, takes forever."

While it must’ve been a hard production at times to get everything perfect, it looks like they pulled it off because the footage shown in the trailers for the film looks awesome! The lighting is spot on and Batman looks completely badass! This movie definitely has a different tone and vibe than the other Batman films. Now, I can’t wait to see how the story plays out!

The synopsis for the film reads:

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city's corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham's elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World's Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator's plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

The Batman is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
