Robert Pattinson Says Zendaya Helped Him Land a Role in DUNE: PART THREE

The sands of Arrakis are shifting again, and Dune: Part Three is shaping up to be a massive finale to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi saga.

With returning heavy hitters and a few intriguing new additions, one casting story in particular stands out. Robert Pattinson is officially stepping into the franchise, and it turns out Zendaya may have played a surprising role in making that happen.

The next chapter continues building on the world established in the first two films, bringing back core cast members like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, and even Jason Momoa.

On top of that, Anya Taylor-Joy, who briefly appeared in Dune: Part Two, will have a much larger presence this time around. But it’s Pattinson’s arrival that’s got fans especially curious.

While speaking at an event for the trailer release, Pattinson shared how his admiration for the franchise turned into a real opportunity, and how Zendaya might’ve nudged things along:

“I absolutely adored these movies. I saw them multiple times in the theaters. And I think I was talking to (Zendaya) on the set of The Drama. I was like, ‘How do I get in one of those Dune movies?’ And it was a very unexpected call a few months later. And I kind of did think you had something to do with it.”

It’s a pretty great origin story for landing a role in one of the biggest sci-fi franchises out there. Pattinson also made it clear that his excitement goes beyond just joining the cast. He’s genuinely in awe of what Villeneuve and the team have created:

“I just think they’re such a towering achievement by the cast. It’s so incredible. And I just think everybody wants to work with Denis (Villeneuve), he’s a master.

“When you see the scope and scale and ambition of these movies on set, you get why they feel like this on the screen. It’s just an extraordinary, amazing experience to have.”

Pattinson will be taking on the role of Scytale, a major antagonist pulled from Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah. For those familiar with the books, that name carries some serious weight.

Scytale is a Tleilaxu Face Dancer with the ability to alter appearance and even sex, making him a dangerous and unpredictable player in a plot to bring down Paul Atreides.

Pattinson kept details close to the chest but dropped a small tease about what fans can expect:

“It’s an extremely fun character to play. And the look for it is quite extraordinary.”

If you’ve followed Pattinson’s career, you know he thrives in strange, offbeat roles. From unsettling indie characters to his turn as The Batman, he’s built a reputation for diving into the weird corners of storytelling. Scytale sounds like it fits right into that lane.

Of course, he’ll be stepping into a villain lineup that’s already delivered some awesome performances. Stellan Skarsgård’s Baron Harkonnen and Austin Butler’s Feyd-Rautha set a high bar for unsettling antagonists in this universe, so it’ll be interesting to see how Pattinson carves out his own space.

With Dune: Part Three drawing inspiration from Dune: Messiah, the story is expected to lean into more complex political and psychological territory as Paul’s reign faces serious challenges. Adding a shape-shifting manipulator like Scytale into the mix makes things more interesting.

We’ll find out how it all plays out when Dune: Part Three hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
