Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne in THE BATMAN Was Inspired by Kurt Cobain and We Have New Photos
Ever since Robert Pattinson was cast in the role of Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman, in the The Batman, I was curious to see how the character would be handled and how it would be different from the other versions of the character that we’ve seen in previous films.
From what I’ve seen in the trailers, this version of Bruce Wayne is dark and moody in a way we haven’t seen before. It’s definitely a different version of the character and I like what I’ve seen so far. I like that Wayne isn’t the billionaire playboy type that we’ve seen before.
Well, it turns out the director Matt Reeves’ version of the character was inspired by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. With that in mind, I guess it makes sense that they would use an orchestral version of Cobain’s classic song “Something In The Way” in the trailer for the film. There’s a connection between that song in the trailer and the version of Bruce Wayne that we’re seeing.
During an interview with Empire, Reeves explained:
“When I write, I listen to music, and as I was writing the first act, I put on Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way’. That’s when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse. So I started making this connection to Gus Van Sant’s Last Days, and the idea of this fictionalised version of Kurt Cobain being in this kind of decaying manor.”
This is definitely a version of the character that I’m interested in seeing. The filmmaker goes on to talk about Pattinson’s performance in the Safdie Brothers’ Good Time, which is what caught the filmmaker’s attention.
“In that movie you could really feel his vulnerability and desperation, but you could also feel his power. I thought that was a great mix. He’s also got that Kurt Cobain thing, where he looks like a rock star, but you also feel like he could be a recluse.”
Pattinson goes on to talk about Batman and how the little gadgets that he uses are home made. The gadgets he uses in the film aren’t the cool flashy ones that Lucius Fox builds for him.
“Bruce has been hiding away. He’s not really a socialite at all. He’s building all these little contraptions and things, just with Alfred. And even Alfred thinks he’s gone insane!”

The Batman is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
