Robert Rodriguez Developing a Female-Led ZORRO Series for NBC

Writer and director Robert Rodriguez is developing a new Zorro series for NBC. The series will be a contemporary take on the classic masked vigilante, but this time it’ll be a woman in the lead role. Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara is also a producer on the project.

Rodriguez is writing and producing the series alongside his sister Rebecca Rodriguez, who is also set to direct it. This new version of the series centers on Sola Dominguez, “an underground artist who fights for social injustice as a contemporary version of the mythical Zorro. Her life is threatened by several criminal organizations after she exposes them.”

Years ago, Robert Rodriguez was set to direct The Mask of Zorro and even cast Antonio Banderas as the lead. The director left the project and didn’t end up directing it. It ended up being helmed by Martin Campbell and was a decent film from what I remember.

I hope the series turns out to be good. Zorro’s always been a cool and fun character, and it’ll be interesting to see what they are planning for this new vision of the character.
