Robert Zemeckis' Live-Action JETSONS Pilot Lands at ABC

In the 1960's they were one of the most iconic families on television, and now more than 50 years into the future, The Jetsons are back. ABC has landed a put pilot commitment for a multi-camera, live-action reboot of the 1960s Hanna-Barbera animated series. It will be executive produced by Back To the Future‘s Robert Zemeckis. A "put pilot" deal includes penalties if the pilot is not aired, in other words, it's pretty much guaranteed that a pilot will be picked up to series.

Deadline Hollywood reports that the new version will be written by Gary Janetti, who has background in both multi-camera and animated comedy series, with experience on NBC’s Will & Grace and Fox’s Family Guy. The multi-camera sitcom is set 100 years in the future and looks at America’s favorite future family through a modern filter.

ABC is a great fit for the project because of its already well-established family comedy brand that includes Modern Family, Black-ish, The Goldbergs, and Fresh Off The Boat. The original Jetsons series also aired on ABC even though it only lasted less than a season in primetime. It was revived in 1985 for another two-season run in syndication.
