ROBIN HOOD and Andy Serkis' MOWGLI Get Official PG-13 Ratings

It’s been a while since we heard anything about the new Robin Hood movie, but the MPAA has spoken and it will receive a PG-13 rating. The reason is: “extended sequences of violence and action, and some suggestive references.” This probably doesn’t come as a shock to anyone really. Most other versions of Robin Hood have been PG-13, so it’s expected. However, Andy Serkis’ Mowgli is also getting a PG-13 rating. This should help solidify that this is not the same Jungle Book movie that Disney has put out. The reason for the rating is: “intense sequences of action violence including bloody images, and some thematic elements.” Serkis himself wanted a darker film in hopes of scaring kids, not because he’s mean, but because he knows they love being scared and believes they are “sophisticated”:

“It’s a PG-13, more a kind of ‘Apes’ movie, a slightly darker take, closer to Rudyard Kipling’s. It’s great to scare kids in a safe environment because it’s an important part of development, and we all loved to be scared as kids, so we shouldn’t overly protect them. Kids are so sophisticated, and that is why our ‘Jungle Book’ is quite dark.”

I’m still not sold on Robin Hood (how many times will we get the same story?), but Mowgli sounds pretty cool. Here’s a synopsis for Mowgli:

“Human child Mowgli is raised by a wolf pack in the jungles of India. As he learns the often harsh rules of the jungle, under the tutelage of a bear named Baloo and a panther named Bagheera, Mowgli becomes accepted by the animals of the jungle as one of their own, but the fearsome tiger Shere Khan doesn’t take a liking to him. But there may be greater dangers lurking in the jungle, as Mowgli comes face to face with his human origins.”
