Robin Williams' Daughter Slams AI Recreations of Him Describing it as a "Horrendous Frankensteinian Monster"
Robin Williams‘ daughter Zelda recently took to Instagram to slam the AI recreations of her father, the legendary comedian who who passed away in 2014. As you know, AI has become a hot topic in Hollywood, and when it comes to Zelda seeing these AI recreations of her dad, she understandably calls them “personally disturbing.”
When it comes to the actors’ strike, SAG-AFTRA has listed AI recreations as a “a mandatory subject of bargaining” against the AMPTP, and this includes “the use of performer’s voice, likeness or performance to train an artificial intelligence system designed to generate new visual, audio, or audiovisual content.”
Zelda shared her thoughts on Instagram, saying: “I am not an impartial voice in SAG’s fight against AI. I’ve witnessed for YEARS how many people want to train these models to create/recreate actors who cannot consent, like Dad. This isn’t theoretical, it is very very real.”
She added: “I’ve already heard AI used to get his ‘voice’ to say whatever people want and while I find it personally disturbing, the ramifications go far beyond my own feelings. Living actors deserve a chance to create characters with their choices, to voice cartoons, to put their HUMAN effort and time into the pursuit of performance.”
“These recreations are, at their very best, a poor facsimile of greater people,” Zelda concluded, “but at their worst, a horrendous Frankensteinian monster, cobbled together from the worst bits of everything this industry is, instead of what it should stand for.”
It’s pretty insane to see what AI is capable of right now, and it’s only going to get better as the technology improves. It’s a lot of fun to play with, and it can make for an effective tool, but there are definitely things that need to be regulated with the tech.
