ROBOCOP Is Back! Amazon Orders New TV Series From Blumhouse Atomic Monster

The future of law enforcement is heading back to Detroit. After spending years in development, Amazon MGM Studios has officially given the green light to a Robocop TV series, bringing one of sci-fi's most iconic franchises back to the screen.

This time, the story is being reimagined as a television series with Peter Ocko (Lodge 49) serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, while James Wan and Blumhouse Atomic Monster are helping lead the charge.

According to the official logline, Robocop follows "a giant tech conglomerate" that persuades the city to place a powerful robot on its police force. There's just one catch. That machine has been implanted with the consciousness of a beloved police officer who died in the line of duty.

The project has been in Amazon's sights for quite a while. Following its acquisition of MGM in 2022, the studio began exploring television adaptations of several well-known properties.

Robocop was among the first wave of franchises selected for development, alongside Legally Blonde, Barbershop, Stargate, The Magnificent Seven, Poltergeist, and Fame. Other MGM properties like Pink Panther and The Thomas Crown Affair were instead targeted for feature film reboots.

Things really started moving in 2024 when Ocko officially boarded the series. Around the same time, Wan signed on as an executive producer, bringing his experience with genre storytelling to the project.

Wan shared his excitement about finally getting the opportunity to play in the Robocop universe, saying: “I’ve been a massive fan of Robocop forever, so getting to help bring this world to television is a dream.

“What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time, and its questions about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve have only grown more urgent.

“With Peter’s distinctive vision and bold approach to storytelling, and alongside Ed and our partners at Amazon MGM Studios, we’re working to honor what made the original iconic and highlight its relevancy in this modern, tech-driven world, while building something unmistakably new for a global audience.”

Wan will executive produce alongside Michael Clear and Rob Hackett through Blumhouse Atomic Monster, with Danielle Bozzone serving as co-executive producer on behalf of the company.

Ed Neumeier, who co-created and co-wrote the original 1987 film, is also joining the series as an executive producer, giving the project a direct creative connection to the franchise's roots.

The original Robocop introduced audiences to Alex Murphy, a Detroit police officer who is brutally killed in the line of duty before being rebuilt as the powerful cybernetic law enforcer RoboCop.

Starring Peter Weller and directed by Paul Verhoeven, the 1987 film blended explosive sci-fi action with biting social satire, taking aim at corporate greed, privatization, media sensationalism, and the growing relationship between humanity and technology.

The franchise expanded with Robocop 2 in 1990, Robocop 3 in 1993, and a 2014 remake. Even decades later, the original film continues to be one of the defining sci-fi movies of its era, especially as conversations surrounding artificial intelligence, robotics, and corporate influence have become part of everyday life.

That relevance is something Amazon MGM Studios is hoping to tap into with the new series. Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, said:

With Ocko steering the creative direction, Wan helping shape the series, and Neumeier involved from the start, this has the potential to deliver more than just another nostalgia play.

If the show can capture the razor-sharp satire, brutal action, and thought-provoking themes that made the original film a classic while updating those ideas for today's AI-driven world, this could end up being a great series.
