ROGUE ONE Director Tony Gilroy Says Film Was In "Terrible Trouble," Before Reshoots
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story turned out to be one of the most universally acclaimed films the franchise has released in quite a while, but had it not been for re-shoots, that wouldn't have been the case. That's what writer/director Tony Gilroy is saying anyway as he recently detailed just how bad things were going for the film before he stepped in to make some changes:
I've never been interested in Star Wars, ever. So I had no reverence for it whatsoever. I was unafraid about that. And they were in such a swamp. They were in so much terrible, terrible trouble that all you could do was improve their position. If you look at Rogue, all the difficulty with Rogue, all the confusion of it and all the mess... in the end when you get in there, it's actually very, very simple to solve because you sort of go, 'This is a movie where, folks, just look. Everyone is going to die.' So it's a movie about sacrifice.
Gilroy didn't detail exactly what the film's problems were to THR but it has been stated that he reshot the film's ending, so we're guessing it was his decision to kill everyone. It's a good thing he did, because I don't think that film has the same emotional impact without that sacrifice. Also, good on Gilroy for tying in A New Hope at the end despite having little love for the Star Wars franchise! People who are worried about the Solo reshoots, remember that's not always a bad thing!
