Role Announces Unofficial D&D Beyond Integration As STRANGER THINGS Continues To Fuel Growing Interest In DUNGEONS & DRAGONS

The cultural effect of Stranger Things is undeniable. When it first aired, interest in the TTRPG Dungeons & Dragons greatly increased due to the main characters playing the game. What is crazy to me, is that the show still continues to drive interest into this game once only played by the nerdiest among us.

For example, the virtual tabletop platform Role has seen a 285% increase in interest in D&D since part one of season 4 aired on May 17th. Prior to season 4, D&D made up half of their game rooms created and jumped up to 80% after season 4 aired and has seen a 130% increase of people playing D&D. These are crazy numbers, and naturally as being a newer virtual system could be partly attributed to new users, but certainly just new users wouldn’t contribute to those numbers entirely, especially with how fast they have gone up. It will be interesting to see if these numbers spike again in the wake of part 2 of season 4.

To help new players get into the game, Role has announced an unofficial integration with D&D Beyond coming later this month as well as launching their own original D&D starter adventure. Founder Elle Dwight has this to say:

This Stranger Things season has had an influence on pop culture, as we saw when Kate Bush was pushed into the number 1 spot recently. The show has had a big effect on this vertical of role-playing games. We’re so excited to see a spike in interest in D&D and it is serendipitous that it coincides with the launch of Role’s new features specifically designed to make us the easiest platform to start your next D&D campaign on.

You can check out the image below to get a glimpse of how the integration will look. I really like using D&D Beyond for my character sheets, so I hope that Role is able to pull off the same ease of use that I’ve grown accustomed to with D&D Beyond. Regardless, this is an exciting time for old and new players looking for more people to play with.
