Ron Howard Reflects on Seeing STAR WARS For the First Time and Comments on Directing HAN SOLO

Director Ron Howard is about to embark on a journey that will thrust him into the world of Star Wars. He's had a lot of friends work on these Star Wars films over the years and now because of a series of unfortunate events, it's his time to jump in that universe and help develop the Han Solo film.

The director made his first statement about joining the Han Solo film on Twitter recently, but during a recent Q&A at Cannes Lions, he reflected on the first time he heard about Star Wars from George Lucas and what it was like for him seeing the first film for the first time.

He said, "I've been around the Star Wars universe from the beginning," and went on to explain how Lucas was developing the story while he was directing Howard in American Graffiti. When Lucas told him about the idea, he said he thought it sounded "crazy."

Howard then talked about how he waited two hours in line with his wife to see Star Wars: A New Hope when it first opened up. After the movie was over he said:

"We left almost speechless, and I said, 'Do you want to see it again?'And we got in line and waited another 90 minutes to see it twice the same day."

That's a true Star Wars fan right there folks! When talking about joining the Han Solo project, he was very cordial in his statement saying:

"It’s a little opportunity that came my way. I’ve been a fan forever. It’s gratifying to be asked to lend my voice to the [Star Wars] universe. So many people involved in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise are friends. It’s already been in production, and there’s a lot of really great work there."

Sounds like he's already started going through the footage that Phil Lord and Chris Miller shot, and he says there's a lot of great work there, so that's good! Howard is being placed in a very delicate situation, but it's one that I think he'll be able to handle. After all, it's Ron Howard! I'm sure he'll come in and get the production back on track and give Lucasfilm and the fans a Han Solo movie that they'll be proud of.
