Ron Perlman WIll Only Reaturn To Play Hellboy if Guilermo del Toro is Involved

Ron Perlman has always been the definitive Hellboy for many fans, and he recently made it clear that he’d only return to the role under one condition… Guillermo del Toro has to be the one directing.

In an interview with That Hashtag Show, Perlman was asked if he’d be open to stepping back into Hellboy’s boots. His answer was simple: “For Guillermo I would.”

He went on to emphasize his loyalty to del Toro, who helmed the two Hellboy films he starred in, saying: “That’s his franchise as far as I’m concerned, and I’m his boy.”

Perlman even revealed that he turned down a chance to reprise the role for another director, sharing: “I had an opportunity to play him for other people and I passed.” For Perlman, Hellboy without del Toro isn’t Hellboy at all.

The Hellboy films are based on Mike Mignola’s Dark Horse comic, was a success, pulling in $99.8 million worldwide. That led to the 2008 sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, which was just as well-received.

Despite years of discussion and fan demand, a third installment never materialized. Instead, the franchise was rebooted twice with neither attempt capturing the magic and greatness of del Toro’s vision.

The 2019 Hellboy starring David Harbour flopped, earning only $55 million worldwide, and the latest attempt, 2024’s Hellboy: The Crooked Man with Jack Kesy, barely made a dent, grossing just $2 million globally.

Given how both reboots struggled, I doubt we’ll see another attempt to make a Helboy movie for a long time. I personally think if someone did attempt to adapt Hellboy again it should be a badass animated series with Perlman voicing the character.
