Review: RONNY CHIENG: ASIAN COMEDIAN DESTROYS AMERICA!
Netflix has proven time and time again that viewers want more stand up comedy, so why not start pumping these out all the time? This brings us to Ronny Chieng, a correspondent on The Daily Show who has also starred in Crazy Rich Asians and other major projects. He is a blunt comedian that leans into stereotypes and honest truths that most people wouldn’t dare to speak.
Let’s talk about the jokes themselves. I think they can be really, really good most of the time. Some of the jokes are incredible and very well thought out, honestly. From talking about his heritage, race in America, and living in New York, to the glory of the Japanese standard of toilets cleaning your butthole really well, he covers a lot of good material.
I would say though, his stand up comedic style can be a little over the top, saying the same line over and over again to get more laughs, it seems a little cheap at times. That may be my own opinion and taste, but I find his presentation to be a little too silly and annoying instead of funny. But, other people really enjoy the way he presents himself, and so it works well enough.
I would say, overall, his special was good, a lot of fun topics and smart jokes. But the quality material sometimes gets lost in the over performance and almost adolescent presentation.
