Rumor: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Roller Coaster May Be Heading to EPCOT
An attraction called Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission — Breakout! is replacing Disneyland's Tower of Terror ride, and if our comments section is any indication, a lot of fans aren't happy about it. But maybe they'll be more open to an additional Guardians-related ride that's rumored to be coming to Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center.
Walt Disney World Today (via /Film) says that current EPCOT attraction Ellen's Energy Adventure is going to be replaced with the first roller coaster in the park's history, a Guardians of the Galaxy-themed ride that "would feature both elaborate scenes and a long roller coaster portion." This is notable because it would be the first ride in the park's 35 year history to eschew the "edutainment" theme that they've cultivated there, and it would be only the sixth ride there to be categorized as "thrill."
Interestingly, there are apparently some major restrictions on the use of the Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy name due to competing rights issues with Universal Studios (who pimps the characters and the brand in their Islands of Adventure park), so there appears to be a chance that this ride could make it all the way through production without having those labels appear anywhere on it. It'll be fascinating to see how they deal with this issue, and if they can come to some sort of legal resolution or have to find a creative way around those restrictions.
I haven't visited Ellen's Energy Adventure, but I can't imagine theme park fans will be as up in arms about this news as they are about the dismantling of Tower of Terror, which is a beloved ride among fans. We'll have to wait and see if this rumor, like Mission — Breakout!, eventually ends up coming true.
