Ryan Coogler Looked to PUSS IN BOOTS to Create His Vampire Villain in SINNERS

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners isn’t your average vampire flick. Yeah, it’s packed with blood, gore, and horror. But it’s also a film filled with heart and soul. It’s a great movie, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you should check it out!

Turns out, the movie also has a surprising inspiration for it’s main villain, with the movie Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

During an episode of the Get Rec’d podcast, Coogler revealed that one of his biggest creative influences behind the film’s chilling antagonist, Remmick, who was played by Jack O’Connell. It wasn’t a classic Dracula or Nosferatu. It was the death-whistling, scythe-twirling Wolf from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Coogler explained: “Think about the villain. Think about his defining features. Think about his demeanor.”

Now that he’s pointed that out, you can definitly see the influence. The quiet menace, the sense of dread, that’s exactly what Coogler wanted to channel into Remmick.

Like the Wolf, Remmick haunts, lurks in the shadow, and he comes complete with with glowing eyes and an eerie calm that unsettles everyone in the room. He also sure does know how to sing and dance the Irish jig!

The movie follows brothers Smoke and Stack, played by Michael B. Jordan, who return to their hometown only to find an evil presence has taken over their beloved home. At the center of it all is Remmick, a vampire obsessed with spreading his infection and consolidating power.

I just love that Coogler took a seemingly unexpected inspiration from an animated fairy tale sequel and used it to build one of the a terrifying new villain for his vampire movie.
