Ryan Gosling Says THE NICE GUYS Didn't Get a Sequel Because of ANGRY BIRDS
Director Shane Black’s 2016 movie The Nice Guys was a lot of fun and it was met with positive reviews. There was hope for a sequel, but regardless of how well the movie was received a sequel didn’t happen.
The film is set in 1970s Los Angeles, and the story follows a down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) who must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star.
During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.
In a recent interview with CB, Gosling was asked about why a sequel never happened, and he put the blame on the animated film Angry Birds.
The actor said: “So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds. So Angry Birds just, just destroyed us. Angry Birds got a sequel.”
The Angry Birds movie had an opening weekend of $38 million, while The Nice Guys only brought in $11.2 million at the box office. On the same weekend, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising opened to a $21.7 million. Captain America: Civil War was also in its third week at the time and it earned $32.9 million in its third weekend.
The Nice Guys had a lot of big competition and unfortunately, it got buried in the competition.
