Ryan Gosling Will Perform BARBIE Song "I'm Just Ken" at the Academy Awards
It has been confirmed that Barbie actor Ryan Gosling will in fact be performing his Oscar-nominated song, “I’m Just Ken,” at the upcoming 96th Academy Awards show. Although it is routine for musicians to appear at the show and perform the nominated song, it was unconfirmed for a while that Gosling would actually do the performance himself that was the dream sequence spectacle in the film. It’s unclear if he will recreate the dance number that accompanied the song, or if he will do a stripped down version onstage, but that’s one more reason to tune in on March 10th.
In his Variety cover story in early February, Gosling insisted that the Academy hadn’t yet asked him to perform. “It might be too much of a risk to have me do it,” said Gosling, who is up for an acting Oscar for his work as Ken. “I don’t know how that would work. But I’m open to it.”
Mark Ronson, who wrote the song with Andrew Wyatt, told Variety at the Grammys that it was his dream for Gosling to perform at the Academy Awards.
When asked if he’d possibly sub in another singer should Gosling not want to perform “I’m Just Ken” live during the Oscars, Ronson said, “No. I think if Ryan doesn’t do it then we’re not doing it.”
“I’m Just Ken” is one of two Barbie tracks that earned an Oscar nomination for best original song. The other is “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas, which won the Grammy for best song written for visual media over “I’m Just Ken” and fellow Barbie hit “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa.
The Academy Awards will air on ABC on March 10 starting at 4 p.m. PT. Jimmy Kimmel returns as host.
