Ryan Reynolds Explains Why One of John Candy's Roles Would Receive an Oscar Nomination If It Were Released Today

Ryan Reynolds is a producer on the upcoming documentary John Candy: I Like Me, which is directed by Colin Hanks, and explores the life and career of the late, great comedic actor John Candy.

The actor was known for creating lovable and hilarious characters that have stuck with all of us for decades. But there’s one role that despite meeting the criteria of a classic comedy, cuts a little deeper than the rest.

While attending the Toronto International Film Festival press conference for John Candy: I Like Me, ahead of its October premiere, Reynolds talked about which of Candy’s roles would garner an Oscar nomination if it were to come out today.

He chose the 1987 classic Planes, Trains & Automobiles:

“John had a way about him that really brought people together and still does to this day. I look at Planes, Trains and Automobiles and that performance of Del Griffith. I believe that that would be nominated for an Academy Award if that were to come out in this moment today, in this age.”

That film is where the title of the documentary, “I Like Me,” came from, and it’s the monologue in which Candy says that bit that is truly the heart of the film. That movie is hilarious and awkward, heartbreaking and beautiful, and I couldn’t agree more.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles is a Thanksgiving classic, and one I always look forward to revisiting.

John Candy: I Like Me will be available to stream on Prime on October 10th.
