Ryan Reynolds Had a Pitch For DEADPOOL 2 That the Studio Immediately Refused and Called "The Dumbest Thing Ever"
Ryan Reynolds hit the comic book movie world over the head with his raucous and wild adaptation of Deadpool back in 2016. The audience ate it up, and were hungry for more, and the studio wasn’t going to say no to a sure thing, so a second film was greenlit right away. But there were plenty of ideas for the movie, and many of them were thrown out before they landed on the story we ended up with.
In the early stages of development, actor Kyle Chandler was to play the time-traveling badass Cable (that role ultimately went to Josh Brolin). Also, the character of Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) was to become a superheroine called Copycat, and there was to be a cameo from the Thing, a character from the Fantastic Four. Those ideas were all eventually dropped.
One major original plot point was pitched by Reynolds himself, and it was promptly thrown out by the studio, who slammed it for being so incredibly stupid. In a 2018 interview on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Reynolds explained:
"At the time, we were — well, my first pitch to the studio was not met very well. I pitched them that Deadpool — this is for the sequel — that Deadpool would ... the whole story of the movie would be Deadpool trying to steal the big red chair from 'The Voice.' And they were like, 'No. That's the dumbest thing ever. So, no.'"
That’s hilarious. I honestly don’t hate the idea. It has fairly low stakes for the main plot of a superhero movie, but Deadpool can pull off the ridiculous, and I could get on board with that. I can’t wait to see what hijinks Deadpool & Wolverine will get into in the third film, due out this July 26th.
