Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Director Shawn Levy Discuss Film's Rating, Cameos, and More
Deadpool & Wolverine tickets went on sale this week, and in anticipation of this summer’s big blockbuster, Fandango sat down with the stars of the film, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, as well as director Shawn Levy to talk about everything from the R rating to cameos and beyond. Levy first began by talking about making this threequel, Marvel’s first R-rated movie, and why it was important to uphold the tone of the previous films:
"We were clear from the get-go. We said, 'Well, the three of us are going to do this and we've got to be truthful to the tone of a Deadpool movie.' That means we're not softening the edges. We're going to be audacious and funny and edgy, the way I know I, as a fan, want from Logan and from Wade Wilson. I have to say, every time Ryan, Hugh, and I went in expecting pushback, we got support from Kevin, from everyone at Disney. They have trusted us and allowed us to do the version of Deadpool & Wolverine that we feel is best."
When the conversation turned to cameos, the trio refused to confirm or deny whether we'll see the likes of Elektra, Mystique, and Storm (though Jackman seemingly had to stop himself from smiling when the latter was mentioned). As for persistent rumors surrounding Taylor Swift as Dazzler, Reynolds responded:
"You know, movies like this...there's so much speculation about so many people that might end up in the film. I saw one that was convinced that Elvis is in the movie. Anything can happen and that's sort of what I love about this universe. Surprises are the essence of Deadpool."
Levy added:
"We come to this movie...I definitely come to this movie...as a fan. A fan of the X-Men movies and the Deadpool movies. And so, this movie was definitely made with the love of being a fan. Wade Wilson and Logan are built to not get along right from the comic books forward. These are two characters who are really constructed in a way that's gonna drive the other crazy, especially Logan. He would really, really find Wade a pain in the ass. The relationship and this journey goes places that are unexpected. It's audacious. There's sick action, for sure. The relationship and the way that two-hander evolves will be surprising to people."
Jackman added the final word on Deadpool & Wolverine, saying:
"Fans are going to be very happy. I've spoken with fans around the world for 24 years. I feel like I have a connection and I always love talking to them. They've very honest...I've heard not great things about what I've done, I've heard good things, and there's going to be a lot of happiness. The thing I want to impress on fans the most is from the moment I read the script that Ryan and Shawn wrote, there was a love of Wolverine and taking care of Wolverine and also a desire to give runway to the character that we've never had before. To express parts of him that we've never been able to do before. Something about the dynamic between the characters...you fans will see a different side and I know from what they've told me that they're gonna be, like, 'Yes!'"
We can’t wait! This movie has more hype than any other Marvel project in a few years. It has such a fun feel to it, and I think we are in for some great surprises. Check out the full interview below, and get your tickets to Deadpool & Wolverine now on Fandango.
