Ryan Reynolds Paid Out of His Own Pocket to Have the DEADPOOL Writers on the Set
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are the brains behind the script for the incredible Deadpool. They spent six years developing the project on and off, never knowing if Fox would ever greenlight the project. They worked very closely with director Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds on that script, and when the studio actually gave it the go, they wanted to keep the cost of production down around $60 million. In an effort to make that budget work, they opted not to pay the writers to be on the set to help with any rewrites.
It's always good to have the writers of the film on set to help keep the project on the right track. Miller, Reynolds, Reese, and Wernick are the core team behind Deadpool, and they all played a huge part in making Deadpool the amazing movie that it was. To keep this team of talent together through the film's production, Reynolds paid Reese and Wernick out of his own pocket to have them on the set and helping with the production of the film.
When talking to AMC’s Geeking Out (via Comic Book), the writers explained:
"We were on set every day. Interestingly, Ryan wanted us there, we were on the project for six years. It was really a core creative team of us, Ryan, and the director Tim Miller. Fox, interestingly, wouldn’t pay for us to be on set. Ryan Reynolds paid out of his own money, out of his own pocket."
How great is that!? It just shows you how much Reynolds cares for this character and franchise and also shows you how dedicated and loyal he is to the team he worked with to help bring this character to life. There's no doubt that their presence on the set helped make Deadpool as awesome as it was.
